Charges

Charge (Electric Charge)
Charge is a basic property of matter due to which objects experience electrical force. It is responsible for attraction and repulsion between objects.

Types of Charges

1️⃣ Positive Charge (+)

  • A body has positive charge when it loses electrons.

  • Example: A glass rod rubbed with silk becomes positively charged.

2️⃣ Negative Charge (−)

  • A body has negative charge when it gains electrons.

  • Example: A plastic rod rubbed with wool becomes negatively charged.

Important Rules

  • Like charges repel each other ( + with + or − with − ).

  • Unlike charges attract each other ( + with − ).

Additional Points

  • The SI unit of charge is Coulomb (C).

  • Charge is carried by particles like:

    • Electron (− charge)

    • Proton (+ charge)
